I remember being surprised by the awe and respect shown by Americans to the Office of the President. I was struck by how many people were not only willing, but also honoured to serve their country if called to do so by their President. I don’t know if this is still true, as the current office holder has opened the doors to criticism and comedy in an interesting way. In truth, I don’t know if there has ever really been a time when those humble and thoughtful enough to serve selflessly outweighed the number in it for personal gain, career enhancement or some other rewards. But now the facade has fallen, and called into question the very notion of service.
